Wonderful post, beautifully written! I think there’s nothing wrong at all with staying in the same spot. When I lived in France, the nurse at the college where I taught had never set foot outside her native village. ‘J’aime pas me deplacer’ she’d say, and as ever I liked the French way of expressing it – putting oneself outside one’s place. Outside the comfort zone, you might say. I’m looking forward to reading that Richard Russo very much indeed.

You’re not the last person to read this. I’ve had it on my radar for quite a while and just haven’t picked it up. However, your review may just change that. It sounds wonderul. I, too, have lived my entire life (except for three years when I first married my Marine Corps husband) in the same small town that I was born in. I look at this as a blessing, not a curse. I pity those who don’t really have strong roots anywhere. Don’t get me wrong — I’d love to travel all over the world, but I always want to end up back at home.

I skimmed your review because Bridge of Sighs is coming up sometime soon on my TBR (I’ve been meaning to read it since it came out last summer, and I *heart* Richard Russo), and I’m so happy to hear that it’s lovely. Looking forward to it!

I lived my whole life in the same small(ish) town up until two years ago. I moved in to the house that my husband grew up in, two hours away from my old town. Like your husband, we bought it from his mother and just switched rooms. It was very hard- new wife, new house, new city far from home. It was rough. I still get lost every once and a while. But I feel a little rooted now, and have made friends around the neighborhood. Here’s hoping-

Sigh. I didn’t even know that Russo had a new book out. This sounds terrific. (And by reading about it on amazon, I learned about two other books I really want to read: Tom Perotta’s The Abstinence Teacher, and Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead). Thanks for this review — I can’t wait to read the book!
