As a lifelong Michigan resident, I’m thrilled to claim novelist Jaimy Gordon as one of our own. Ms. Gordon, a professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, received the National Book Award last night for her novel, Lord of Misrule, a small press publication that explores horse racing in West Virginia.
In her acceptance speech, Ms. Gordon indicated her somewhat surprising win was a “message of hope” for all writers.
It’s a nice boost for Michigan, too.
Ms. Gordon will be reading from Lord of Misrule at my local library on December 5, 2010. You can bet I’ll be there, with bells on!
Very exciting for Michigan. I’ve not heard of the author or the book before but I’m sure I will have a chance to pick up the book and read it sometime in the future. That is awesome that you get to meet the author!
There are some amazing writers here in Michigan aren’t there! I cannot wait to hear how her reading goes… I listened to a segment on NPR:
Her reading is at the bottom!
Awesome that a small press writer won.
Oooh, you are so lucky to be able to hear her read. She is the real deal as far as knowing the racetrack, from what I have heard. What a treat! Will you blog about the event for us, pretty please?
