The Sunday Salon: Readus Interruptus

Don’t you hate being interrupted when you’re smack dab in the middle of something really good?

I do.

It’s happened three times this week, and as a result, my reading life is all out of whack.

Here’s the deal:

I was about mid-way through The Marriage Plot, quite nicely immersed in the multiple story lines and feeling as if I were getting to know the characters pretty well, when we left for Florida on Tuesday. I wanted to travel light, i.e., without carrying a heavy book in my duffle bag. So I fired up my Sony Reader, with which I’m enjoying a renewed relationship, and downloaded Elizabeth George’s latest Inspector Lynley novel, Believing the Lie. I got into this one right away, unlike the last couple of books in the series which just haven’t grabbed me. But with this one, I felt like Ms. George was back on her “A” game, and I was eating it up.

On Thursday night, down to one bar of power remaining on the Sony, I realized I had forgotten the power cord.

Drat.

When the battery ran dry, I was on page 263 (of 516), with two days left to go  before heading home.

Interrupted again.

Luckily I have some books on reserve in Florida –  a small library of volumes I’ve collected in the 10 years we’ve been going there, as well as books that guests have left behind. I decided that a re-read of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society would be a nice diversion, and short enough to finish before we headed home.

Which it proved to be. So when we got home late last night, I was eager to charge up the Sony and plunge back into the thickets with Lynley, Havers, and the St. James’.

Alas, it was not to be. I had forgotten about a review promised for Tuesday, and the book was still sitting nicely atop my To Be Read stack.

Sigh.

Readus interruptus once more.

How about you? Have you been able to hold a steady course with your reading this week?

  1. That has to be the worse when a power cord is left home. I have been trying to get thru “The Bronze Horseman Simons. Once I find the time to just sit and read, the story goes pretty quick. Finding the time is my problem.

  2. That sounds very frustrating! My reading interruptions tend to come from my kids – or real life creeping up on me and leaving me no time to read. This weekend has been nice, though, with lots of time to read. 🙂 Have a great week!

  3. Boo! I hate getting interrupted in the middle of awesome things! The worst is coming home on the subway in the evening — right as my book is getting good, I have to get off the subway and walk home and cook dinner.

  4. Arghhh! Readus Interruptus. Hate it when this happens so you have my full sympathy. I think this kind of thing is what caused me to have so many abandoned books last year – good ones, not ones that I didn’t like and just put aside. This week, luckily, I have been able to hold a slow but steady pace on reading, doing one or two chapters per night of Wild Swans by Jung Chang and a little bit of Fathermucker by Greg Olear (although this is a bus read and I only went on the bus once last week!)

Hope this coming week holds less interruptions for you so you can get back into these books!

  5. My entire life is in a stop and start pattern. I’m going crazy. But as a side note I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for the first time a few weeks ago (I know, I know…late to the party) and I loved it! I hope you have less interruptions this week!
